It is 1797 and Thomas Kydd is now master's mate on the Achilles, a 64 gun ship of the line, returning from the Caribbean to England. Kydd's ship however is diverted to Gibraltar, to form part of the Rock's defences. On Gibraltar, Kydd is reunited with Nicholas Renzi, who soon involves him in a dangerous mission to rescue a diplomat who is fleeing from the French. His mission ultimately concluded, Kydd returns to England only to be caught up in the events of the Mutiny of the Nore. Meanwhile the Dutch fleet at Texel threatens the very survival of England.
