About This Item
Edinburgh: Adam & Charles Black, 1888. Folio. (15 7/8 x 12 inches). Title, dedication and some text leaves printed in red and black, half-title. 50 chromolithographic plates by McLagan & Cumming of Edinburgh after Gibb. (Perforation stamp to title). Original half-red morocco, rebacked.
Limited edition of 1,090 copies, this one of 1,040 with printed facsimile signature of the publishers A. and C. Black.
Inspired by the Loan Collection of Musical Instruments exhibited in the Albert Hall, London in 1885, the present work was undertaken by Hipkins at the suggestion of Robert Glen of Edinburgh and eventually went through a number of editions. The present edition with early impressions of all fifty plates is undoubtedly the most desirable.
