London: Trubner & Co, 1872. First edition. lit. Very Good. First edition. 24mo. in decorated, gilt stamped red cloth. Tipped onto the front pastedown is a small handwritten note, "To W. Hepworth Dixob Esq./ With compliments of/ Charles G. Leland". 168 pp. with leaves ruled in red. Poetry. Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903) was a Pennsylvania born poet, folklorist and humorist. He was educated at Princeton, the Sorbonne and Heidelberg. After early jouranism work, he fought in the American Civil War afterwhich he returned to Europe and settled in London. In his later years he made a particular study ot European gypsies.
