The "Expositions Universelles" or World Fairs were intended to show the latest innovations and inventions. The earliest of these fairs were held in France but were national. The first one of 1798 was the start of eleven national fairs. Sewing machines were invented during the first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work performed in clothing companies. Callebaut shows different models and explains the technqiue of them. Both full page illustrations of the factory show us what factories looked like at the time. At the 1862 exhibition about 50 types of sewing machine were on show on over 20 stands. M. Callebaut from Paris showed 'several modifications of shuttle sewing machines of the Singer type.' Description:
4to, 10 ff; 52 monochrome illustrations of work by Mucha and 28 illustrations by other French Art Nouveau artists; in the original decorated wrappers.A very rare trade catalogue of mural panels and other graphic designs mainly by the famous Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) but also including a selection of works by other French artists such as Cossard and Sonrel. Many works offered here for sale have subsequently become icons of the French Art Nouveau movement. His lithographed panel sets of "Les Quatre Saisons", Les Fleurs, "Les Heures du Jour" and "Les Arts" seem, by today's standards, almost absurdly cheap at between 30 and 40 francs each whilst smaller posters, calendars and menu cards are even more modestly priced. The second part of the catalogue presents the works of 8 other French artists who interpret the vivid colours and flowing vegetative forms of Art Nouveau in a variety of ways. Those, such as Cossard and Sonrel demonstrate the influence of Mucha's style which had been… Read More

Description:
[Chicago, Illinois]: Western News Co, 1870. Toned, one small water stain to plate 9, else fine. Lacking original printed wrapper. Plate 7 appears to be from a different printing.. First printing of "The Heathen Chinee", subtitled "Plain Language from Truthful James", a series of nine (9) lithographic plates based on the narrative poem by Bret Harte (1836-1902). Steeped in Anti-Chinese sentiment, the plates tell the story of a Chinese immigrant named "Ah Sin" who cheats at cards, instigating a violent mob. Plate No. 6 summarizes the overall message of the tale: "We are ruined by Chinese cheap labor". Each plate measures approx. 7.25" by 5.5"; versos blank. Lacking original printed wrapper. OCLC - 7 (Mar 2022). Ironically, Bret Harte (1836-1902) opposed Anti-Chinese sentiment publicly in the 1860s. One reading of "The Heathen Chinee" argues that, as the white men are cheating too, the message is more ambiguous than it appears. Institutional sale only - to be contextualized for educational purposes.
