About This Item

Amsterdam, Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1651, quarto (19,5 x 13), later, but not recent, quarter leather binding, leather label and golden lettering on spine, red edges, printer's mark at the title-page, pp. (14)-316-(4) with number of woodcuts in the text, and a folding plate. Gilbert (1544 - 1603) was one of the most famous physicians of his time, but also a physicist and a natural philosopher. He worked for a long time at the Royal College, where he held many important positions during his career. He is remembered in particular for his famous De Magnete (1600), of which this work represents a sort of follow-up. The work is composed by two widely independent, unfinished parts, collected by the author's brother: the Physiologia (begun after 1590; Gilbert worked on it till his death) and the Meteorologia (begun about 1580 and never accomplished). In Gilbert's posthumous work, the ideas elaborated in the De Magnete are developed and systematized in a dissertation aimed at demolishing the Aristotelian cosmology, and the theory of four elements in particular. In order of obtaining this result, Gilbert analyzes many natural phenomena, from heat to light, from the Moon to the Milky Way and the comets, from the wind to the springs and the sea, building up a cosmology of great historical interest. The margins are a bit short; some foxing at the first and last pages; the folding plate was professionally restored. Otherwise, a very good copy. Original Edition. Brunet, II, 1592; Poggendorff, p. 895; Honeyman, IV, 1502; Willems, 1128. Peraltro esemplare molto ben conservato. Edizione originale. Brunet, II, 1592; Poggendorff, p. 895; Honeyman, IV, 1502; Willems, 1128.
