About This Item

London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth, with spine lettered in black; in its original red, blue, black, and white dust jacket, with New Statesman review to rear panel. Near fine book, with light toning to spine ends, light spotting to text block edges, and a word written in pen to rear pastedown; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light fading to spine, light wear to spine ends, a small closed tear to spine, and light soiling and spotting to rear panel. Overall, a pleasing copy. In this novel, Mrs. McGinty is killed by a blow to the head, and her lodger James Bentley is convicted for the crime. Superintendent Spence has a nagging feeling that Bentley is innocent, so he brings the case to his friend Hercule Poirot, who uncovers a nefarious plot. Mrs. McGinty's Dead is one of Christie's more comic novels, and the first of a handful of Poirot novels to prominently feature Christie's self-caricature, Ariadne Oliver. Crime writer Robert Barnard wrote of the book, "Highly ingenious - at this point she is still able to vary the tricks she plays, not repeat them." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Yet something was amiss: Bentley just didn't look like a murderer. Poirot believed he could save the man from the gallows -- what he didn't realise was that his own life was now in great danger...
