Description:
New York, Alfred A Knopf, 1933, hardcover, 256 pp, First Edition stated, First Printing, Association copy Signed and Inscribed by the Author on the front endpaper "To Kay Francis - all admiration - Max Ewing" and dated "New York, December 1932" Very Good condition, lacking dustjacket. Straight, tight and clean with no markings, slightly rolled and faded spine, nicks to top edge of front board and head of spine, two small holes and edge nicks to front endpaper, small split to paper at front hinge. The many accomplishments of this multi-talented pianist, composer, novelist, poet, sculptor, and photographer were overshadowed by his homosexuality and his unlikely friendship with the prize fighter Jack Pollock. Max's suicide in 1934, at the age of 31, adds drama and sadness to this remarkable man's mostly happy but short life during which Max mingled with dozens of artists, authors, composers, musicians, politicians, stage and movie stars, and wealthy families in Europe, New York, and Hollywood. Description:
London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd,. Very Good in Good+ dust jacket. 1942. Reprint. Hardcover. This book was published originally in JUNE 1942 - this copy was published in AUGUST 1942. So probably a second impression but it just states 'reprinted August 1942'. Fine red cloth covers with very bright gilt titling to the spine. Perhaps a very slight 'lean' to the book - but difficult to assess. In the original publishers dustjacket - NOT price-clipped but some chips to the front corners of the dustjacket and a former owner has reinforced the inside of the d/j spine with masking tape (! ) which doesn't show through and actually has protected the spine - a 0.3 cm only of this tape is neatly on the outside head/tail of the spine, and a small triangle of tape on the rear edge of the spine by the 'F' of 'Frensham'. All chips and head/tail of spine have also been tinted to match the green base of the d/j, and the dustjacket is now in a new protective clear -… Read More

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
