About This Item

London: Faber and Faber,, 1982. First edition, first impression, of this darkly fantastical feminist tale of 1980s America. This curious work was reviewed contemporaneously by John Updike as "an impeccable parable, beautifully written from first paragraph to last". It was reprinted by Faber to great critical acclaim in 2021. The novella was named one of the 20 best American novels since World War Two by the British Book Marketing Council and Ingalls has been reviewed as "one of the most brilliant practitioners of American Gothic since Poe" (The Independent). Octavo. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Scattered foxing to fore edge; jacket unclipped, spine faintly sunned, minor foxing to head of flaps: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
