Vol 8 in a series of mid-20th-century books for children, this is a German fairy tale with lovely pen-and-ink illustrations throughout the 94 pages of text by Herbert Schuffenbauer. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1949, this hardcover small 8vo has cream-colored paper over boards colorfully decorated with a watercolor illustration of 2 children being greeted by a smiling gnome; spine wrapped in red cloth, lettered in black. Condition is VG+: very clean & bright, minor spotting to both boards with light soil & fading/discoloration to rear. Internal pages bright & clean, binding strong & straight, illustrations vivid.
