A scarce edition of Mr Popper's Penguins published by George G. Harrap. First edition thus, with illustrations by Robert Lawson. Set in the 1930s, this children's book by Richard and Florence Atwater tells the story of a poor house painter and his family. After unexpectedly coming into possession of a penguin named Captain Cook, and who later has ten baby penguins, the Popper's must figure out a way to sustain their lifestyle. With an ink inscription to the front free endpaper, 'To Angela, with love from Mum'. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the joints and the head and tail of the spine. The cloth near the spine has discoloured. The front hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some foxing to the front and rear of the volume, pages are bright and clean. Very Good
