About This Item

Boston: Small, Maynard, 1898. First Edition. Publisher’s cloth; front hinge cracking, else nearly fine; in a custom half-morocco slipcase with chemise. A superb presentation copy of Dunne’s first book; inscribed to an individual associated with Small, Maynard, who was clearly instrumental in its publication, “H.G. Pagani, Esq. who acted as Master of Ceremonies at the introduction of Mr. Dooley to a wicked world with the Compliments of F.P. Dunne Nov. 8, 1898.” The small leather bookplate of Katherine Parsons has offset slightly onto the front free endpaper and the inscription. Pagani was associated with the Boston publishing houses of Luce, and Copeland & Day. Dunne wasn’t the first writer to provide humorous comment on contemporary events, but he might be considered America’s first popular one, and so the ancestor of Will Rogers, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and others. Aside from politics and current events, Mr. Dooley comments on golf, football, books, firemen, etc.
