About This Item
Nicely illustrated antique copy of "MOTHER GOOSE'S MELODIES or, Songs for the Nursery," edited by William A. Wheeler. 1878; Houghton Mifflin Company; Boston and New York. The book is beautifully illustrated with numerous full-page engravings, as well as a header illustration for each song. At the front of the book is a biographical sketch of the Goose, or Vergoose family (a.k.a. the "real Mother Goose"). Included are classics such as Jack and Jill, The House that Jack Built, Little Bo-Peep, Baa Baa Black Sheep, etc. There is a Notes section at the back.
Condition:
Light soiling to the covers and spine. There are small patches on the covers where the green cloth has faded (these areas are not stains, but rather places where the green cloth color has faded). Cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is an insignificant crack at the front hinge between the frontispiece and title page (despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly in place and is not at all shaky). Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only a few random pages found with light foxing, and a light smudge and stain. There is a 1" tear at the top edge of pages 1 & 19, and a 1/2" tear at the top of page 73. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
