About This Item

Phoenix, AZ: Manufacturing Stationers, 1921. First Edition. 307pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] Green cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. Portraits of Arizona Governor, Thomas E. Campbell, and the author on a single leaf and laid in. Inscribed by Le Roi Snow on the front free endsheet. Large folding map present at the rear. Written by a non-Mormon historian, this work shows an objective yet sympathetic look at the spread of the Mormon Church in the Southwest. Looking at the entire Arizona Territory as his field of study as well as the march of the Mormon Battalion, the author discusses LDS impact on the California Goldrush; the make-up of the State of Deseret; and many early trails through Arizona. Particular mention is made of Jacob Hamblin; various Indian uprisings; and the massive numbers and histories of LDS settlements organized throughout Arizona - he documents about 250 such settlements. Flake/Draper 5120.
