Part of the American Folkways series, edited by Erskine Caldwell. Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) , often referred to as "the Dean of Western Writers," was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, historian, and environmentalist who taught writing for over 40 years at various institutions, most notably Stanford University. This is his first nonfiction book, which tells the story of a region and a culture that he knew well.
