New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1924. 8vo. 166 pp. Photo frontisp., numerous photo plates, text illustrations, diagrams. Ribbed red cloth, gilt lettering front cover & spine, borders (slight shelfwear), w/ d.j. (minor chipping head of spine, minor creasing, 1 small closed tear), NF/VG- copy. First edition of this history of selenium, the theory of its action, and its various applications. Of particular interest is the large section on the Optophone, a device invented by d’Albe which used selenium photosensors to detect print and convert it into sounds which could be interpreted by the blind so they could read.
