About This Item

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1924. Although this attractive volume has only the original 1900 copyright from the First Edition publisher, Doubleday, Page, & Company, this edition was actually published in the latter part of 1924 to complement the Rudolph Valentino film version, which was released in August of that year. As such, it is a First Edition Thus and is a handsome collectible for admirers of Mr. Valentino, silent films in general, and Booth Tarkington. This edition is in Fine condition, with its original, close-to-Fine dust jacket. (Click on photo). The dust jacket shows a portrait of Rudlph Valentino on the front panel and Valentino with co-star Bebe Daniels in an embrace on the rear panel. The book is bound in a light blue cloth with dark blue lettering and design elements on the front panel and spine. The front endpaper shows a signed photograph of Mr. Valentino, while the rear endpaper shows a signed photograph of Miss Daniels. (These are printed signatures.) In addition, there's a frontis photograph of the two stars in a kiss, as well as five additional photographs from the screenplay throughout the text. The dust jacket in Near-Fine condition in that it has a small hole in the spine area as well as a small stain at the spine bottom, plus several tiny tears. I've placed the dust jacket into a Brodart protective sleeve. The book itself is tightly bound, as well as clean and bright throughout. The book measures 5 3/8 by 7 5/8 inches and includes 116 pages, with an ad for other Tarkington novels in the rear. . First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Synopsis

The young Frenchman did very well what he had planned to do. His guess that the Duke would cheat proved good. As the unshod half-dozen figures that had been standing noiselessly in the entryway stole softly into the shadows of the chamber, he leaned across the table and smilingly plucked a card out of the big Englishman's sleeve.
