About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1888. Cloth. Near Fine. 7.5" x 5. Uncredited. London: Chatto & Windus, 1888. First Edition. 56 Illustrations from woodcut engravings. Small octavo, 405pp.; royal blue cloth, gilt-tooled cover vignette and spine vignette, gilt spine lettering. Corners and spine ends touched, a few ripples and a somewhat tender front hinge. Better than very good, approaching near fine, a sharp copy with cloth and gilt quite bright. Previous owner's name (dated 1903) in pencil on flyleaf. Plebian paeans - hearty and scrofulous songs one might imagine overhearing outside a pub in London, circa 1885. Ashton's famous collection of English folk ballads, popular enough to be re-printed in 1968. This is the 1888 original, liberally seasoned with illustrations from woodcut engravings. L5
