London, William Mackenzie, ca1892. Large hardback, 12 x 10 inches. Half bound calf leather to spine and corners and marbled paper to boards. Black line edging to boards, thick raised banding on spine. Gilt lettering to black leather spine label & gilt decoraitons. Marbled page edges and plain endpapers. In very good condition. Later fine binding, later endpapers. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Hinge at front is a little weak and starting to crack at front endpapers. Endpapers clean, no penned inscriptions, small previous owners label to front “Hillcrest, Charlton Marshall, Dorset.” Some small dark spots/foxing to title page and fontis plate. Some spots and occasional handling marks to some inner plates and pages. Very good bright colour plates. Else a very good clean and tight copy. vii + 538 + 96pp + vi index. Illustrated with 20 colour and 27 B&W full-page plates. A comprehensive book on the horse. Covers all aspects of the use and management of various types of horses in different circumstances. Beginning with the history of the horse and covering the different breeds and horses bred for work and racing, the author concern for the wellbeing of the animals is evident. There are tables of race winners up to 1892 and descriptions of race courses. A fascinating book from the time when horses were the main transport and motive power.
