About This Item
London & New York: Macmillan & Co. Ltd. St. Martin's Press, 1958. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Poor. The interior of the book is clean and complete, showing light wear but no marks or damage. There is a gift inscription to a former owner on the front free end paper (Sept. 20. 1959). The orange cloth covers are in Poor condition, with wear and rubs to edges and corners and noticeable fading. The dust jacket is in terrible condition, with serious wear and missing paper, all covered by clear mending tape. Given these serious condition problems, this should be considered a reading copy only. Synopsis: In the winter of 878, Guthrum, the Viking war leader, launched a "two-pronged attack on the last free Christian kingdom of Wessex, and drove Alfred into a guerrilla refuge on an islet in the Somerset swamp. Elfwyn and Judith, young English captives in the Danish camp hear Guthrum's plans for attack and decide to warn Alfred.
