About This Item

London: John Murray, 1857. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". Various. A rebound first edition copy of David Livingstone's travelogue through South Africa, with a folding frontispiece, illustrations, and a folding map. First edition, rebound in blue cloth. Illustrated with a folding frontispiece, twenty-four black-and-white plates, one folding plate, in-text illustrations, and a folding map of South Africa with Dr Livingstone's travel routes to rear. 'Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa' by David Livingstone is a written recollection of the author's travels and experiences while traversing various different regions of Africa. Livingstone's decision to publish the travelogue with John Murray was seen as an unconventional choice, but it quickly became a bestseller. This text is said to include field science alongside 'exceptionally sympathetic descriptions of African people'.David Livingstone was a famous British physician, explorer, and Christian missionary. He spent much of his life trying to solve an 'age-old mystery' about the Nile River that would bring him the fame to end the African Slave Trade. Unfortunately, his explorations ultimately led to a larger colonial presence in Africa. Collated, complete. Rebound in an institutional cloth binding Externally, smart. Minimal marks to boards. Small amount of wear to extremities. A bit of fading along top of joints. Paste downs are age-toned, with remnants of library stamp on front pastedown. Some marks to both pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and very clean, with minimal age-toning to margins. A damp stain on plate facing page one. A bit of spotting, particularly to first and last few pages. Page repairs to title page, dedication page, and preface. Library stamps to title page as well as blank sides of plates. Plates, including folding plate, are very bright and clean. Folding map to rear is very bright and clean, with a couple of spots to bottom edge. Very Good
