About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1965. Very Good/Very Good. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1965. First Edition. Large, thick octavo; publisher's cloth-backed boards in dust jacket retaining original price ($10.95); [12],1198pp. Moderate wear to jacket extremities, corners bumped, else Very Good and sound.
One of the longest novels ever published, taking the author twenty years to complete and arriving at the editor's office on 3,449 typescript pages. According to the rear jacket panel at one point seven suitcases containing the manuscript went missing at the Gare Lazare in Paris but were eventually "retrieved by seven men from Cook's with seven wheelbarrows." This begs the question: Exactly how big were these suitcases?
