About This Item

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1885. Cloth. Good Only. 7.5" by 5". None. A charming edition of W M Thackeray's Miscellanies. A Victorian English novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was famous for his satirical works that portrayed English society. Thackeray only began writing when he lost his fortune in a banking crash, describing his journalism as "writing for his life". However he was a popular writer and became known for his pieces in various magazines and is known to have popularised the word 'snob'. Here we have a collection of some of his best works that parody and attack high society, military prowess, and marriage and hypocrisy. Many verses are written under various pseudonyms he created whilst in the early stages of his career. Including titles such as The Memoirs of Mr Charles J Yellowplush, Club Snobs, and Fitz-Boodle's Confession. Complete in four volumes. In a tooled cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing to boards and spine. Bumping to boards and chipping to spine, more severe to volume I. Fading to spine. Personal bookplate to front pastedown to all. Front hinge to volume II straining and near loose. Internally, volumes II, III, IV firmly bound. Volume I loosely bound with all pages present. Pages bright and clean. Good Only
