About This Item

Glasgow: R. Chapman, 1816. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Not stated. Four leather bound volumes containing the novels, plays, letters, and essays written by eighteenth century writer Oliver Goldsmith. Four volumes comprising various works by Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, and poet Oliver Goldsmith. Alongside his his comedies and well-known novel The Vicar of Wakefield, the collection also contains a biographical introduction, his poems, letters, essays, eulogies, and even prefaces he wrote for other works. With a bookplate to the front pastedown of all four volumes. Bookplate of John Lothian, with the Lothian family crest and their motto, 'non dormit qui custodit', meaning 'he does not sleep who keeps guard'. In volume III, the bookplate can be found upside down at the rear pastedown. In a contemporary full calf binding with gilt decoration to the spine. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, with a small closed tear at the tail of the sine of Volume II. The first volume is a little more worn than than the rest of the set, with cracks to the front and rear joint near the tail of the spine, a scuff to the leather near the fore edge of the front board, and a discoloured spot at the spine. The front hinges are starting, but remain firm across all volumes, with the rear hinges starting but firm in the first to volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are foxed to the front and rear, but otherwise generally bright and clean throughout. Very Good
