New York: Atheneum, 1978. 1st edition, full maroon cloth, with illustrated dust jacket. This title won the National Book Award for the author, which was his first volume published after winning the Pulitzer Prize for DIVINE COMEDIES. Both volumes went on to form major pieces of his highly acclaimed THE CHANGING LIGHT AT SANDOVER. This copy is a presentation copy to Merrill's longtime friend Christian Ayoub of Montreal, and is inscribed in year of publication: "Christian & J......, Noel! with love from James & Mirabell. 1978" on the title page. A bright copy in like jacket.
