Paris: Raymond Mazieres, 1707. Three volumes of homilies by the Curé of Saint Sulpice. 4th Edition. full leather binding with 6 panels, 2 leather labels to the spine with title and volume. The bindings have some nicking and chipping to them. The surface area is quite pitted. Still attractive. Each volume has vignettes and historiated initials to the beginning of each homily. Each homily has its own title page and date. These were obviously printed as separate homilies and bound together here. Text in French. Vol 1. 1707 4th Edition. This volume has had damage to the bottom edge (looks as if perhaps mice before binding or similar?). As a result, the text block has been shaved to the base (not affecting text). This has resulted in the book being 2.5 cm shorter than the other two volumes. 1890. A beautiful copy of this miniature Qur'an. Full leather, with a leather clasp (still fully working). Gilt decoration. This is a little rubbed to the edges of the spine, but still attractive. All edges gilt. Sewn binding. 3.4cm x 2.1cm. Unpaginated. Although there are no publication details in the book, the titles and index have been confirmed by an Arabic colleague to be an Ottoman Qur'an. Undated, but probably late Nineteenth Century. Internally in excellent, clean condition. 34 x 21 mm (1¼ x 0¾ inches). . Un bel exemplaire de ce Coran miniature. Plein cuir, avec un fermoir en cuir (encore en état de marche). Décoration dorée. L'ouvrage est un peu frotté sur les bords du dos, mais reste attrayant. Toutes les tranches sont dorées. Reliure cousue. 3,4 cm x 2,1 cm. Non paginé. Bien qu'il n'y ait pas de détails de publication dans le livre, les titres et l'index ont été confirmés par un collègue arabe comme étant un Coran ottoman. Metz: P. Didion, [1870]. Wonderful military certificate of competency in the art of cane fighting. Soldiers were expected to pass many different competencies. This particular diploma was awarded to Monsieur Joseph Franc of the 115th French Infantry Regiment. Complete with the ink signatures of attending instructors. Undated, but circa 1870. 325 x 490 mm (12¾ x 19¼ inches). Has some stains and closed tears, but generally in a good condition. In the 1800s carrying a walking stick / cane was a symbol of a gentleman who was fashion conscious, but one who was also ready to defend himself. Whilst fencing was still practiced, it did not enjoy the same popularity with the newly empowered bourgeoisie. Enterprising fencing masters soon translated their skills to the use of the walking stick or la canne. Most of the plates were published by Furne, but other publishers are also represented. The are listed in manuscript to the front of the collection. They include 54 by Alfred & Tony Johannot, 3 by Raffet, Others by Schoeder, Pourvoyeur, Nyon, Lemaitre, Auber, & Perrot. Each is protected by a tissue guard. 174 pages, 84 engraved images to recto only. The engravings come from a variety of works, several are from Sir Walter Scott's work, (which has given dating) others from the Histoire de la Marine Francaise. The binding is clean, but has the beginnings of splitting to the top edge. Slight rubbing to the edges of the binding.
