Here is a wonderful two-part story by James Fenimore Cooper about the son, Miles Wallingford Jr., of very wealthy landowners, who decides to go to sea after the death of his parents. It's about the personal, challenging, and changing relationship between Miles and Neb, a runaway slave onboard who doesn't get punished because Miles claims him to be his slave. Miles and Neb become close, allies, but the racial divide and power differences between the two boil. This book - the sequel or part II, picks up on the story and follows the maritime adventures of Miles, Neb, and Lucy Harding. It resolves many thematic and plot elements left unsettled.
