About This Item

New York: W.A. Townsend and Company, 1861. 1861. Hardcover. Brown decorative binding with gilt illustrations/lettering, and in-blind designs. Beveled extremities. Two frontispieces with tissue overlay and illustrated tail-pieces throughout, 467 pages. This is one book from a set of 32 different novels, a classic story, Miles Wallingford: Sequel to Afloat and Ashore, by James Fenimore Cooper. Beautiful decorative in-blind stamping on binding, highlighted by lettering and designs in gilt, beveled extremities. Illustrated from drawings by F.O.C. Darley (1822-1888), a well-known illustrator known for his works of famous authors of the 19th century, including Charles Dickens. NOT A FACSIMILE or RECENT REPRINT - THIS IS THE ACTUAL 1861 EDITION. Condition of binding: Lightly age darken, light age wear. Endpapers: Beautiful bookplate of Henry Bigelow Williams of Boston (believed to be a well-known property developer, land owner, and distinguished citizen). William wrote his name, city [Boston] and date [1869], and "32 volumes" on first free endpaper. Tissue overlay on frontispieces is worn. Overall, extremely Very Good condition for an uncommon antiquarian novel. Pages are clean, no tears, and readable. Illustrations are clear, vivid. Here is a wonderful two-part story by James Fenimore Cooper about the son, Miles Wallingford Jr., of very wealthy landowners, who decides to go to sea after the death of his parents. It's about the personal, challenging, and changing relationship between Miles and Neb, a runaway slave onboard who doesn't get punished because Miles claims him to be his slave. Miles and Neb become close, allies, but the racial divide and power differences between the two boil. This book - the sequel or part II, picks up on the story and follows the maritime adventures of Miles, Neb, and Lucy Harding. It resolves many thematic and plot elements left unsettled. Very exciting to read. The story is part autobiographical inspired by author James Fenimore Copper's experience as a sailor, according to Rakuten Overdrive. A collectible book.
