“The Midwife’s Tale” is the first book in the At Home in Trinity Series by Delia Parr. It is a story about the life of Martha Cade, a midwife who practices midwifery in a Pennsylania town called Trinity in 1830.

Martha became a widow when her two children were young and to support herself and her family she followed in the profession that has been in her family for generations. She felt that is was her life calling and felt safe in this profession until Dr. McMillan, a young doctor just out of university came to town to practice medicine. Dr. McMillan and Martha clashed from the very beginning as their ways of practicing medicine was very different.

Martha is determined to do the work that God has called her to do, and faces each trial and opportunity with faith and hope that grows with each experience.

The author has introduced me to midwifery. I enjoyed learning about it as well as learning about using herbs to help with healing. I truly enjoyed exploring the medical practices of yesteryear and comparing them to what I know of today’s practices. The author has made Martha’s career interesting and believable.

I liked the way that Martha stood up for what she believes in. Martha is ready to face the consequences of her actions, good or bad.

“The Midwife’s Tale” teaches us that when we place our trust in God, he will carry us through regardless of the circumstances. The author treats us to a story filled with historical references, trust, faith and a bit of romance. The story will tug at your heartstrings as you use your imagination as you travel the road to Trinity.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like a good christian read. The author keeps you wondering what the outcome will be until the end. It is a book that is worth rereading.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House/Baker Publishing Group for review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
