Edges rubbed; very good copy.. 8vo, original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering on the upper board. Errata slip inserted at page eight. Four pages of publisher's terminal ads. An anonymous philosophical poem in 35 parts of three and four stanzas each, handsomely printed by Charles Whittingham for Pickering. Inscribed on the front paste-down "To / Professor F. W. Newman / from the Author as a / slight acknowledgement of / both pleasure and profit derived / from his lectures. Feb 2nd, 1854." Francis William Newman (1805-1897) was a philosopher and brother of Cardinal John Henry Newman. Bookplate of collector Simon Nowell-Smith on the front paste-down.
