About This Item

San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1984 One of 550 copies, printed and designed by Jonathan Clark at the Artichoke Press in Mountain View, California. This copy belonged to Glen Dawson. Natural linen spine over illustrated boards. . Quarto. Color frontispiece; thirty two illustrations, both in black and white and color, including three double-page. Title page printed in black and green. The illustrations were photographed directly from the original lithographs and reproduced from engravings made by the printer. The eight four-color plates were printed by Robert Collins Lithography from laser-scanned separations made at ReproMedia Incorporated, San Francisco. Printed on Mohawk Superfine Paper. A fine copy in a very good plain paper dust jacket with light soiling and minor tape repair to tail of spine and rear wrapper. Original prospectus, receipt from the Book Club of California dated February 11, 1985, and a printed announcement from the Zamorano Club for a presentation by W. Michael Mathes on "The Beginning of Printing in the New World" on January 7, 2009, to be introduced by Glen Dawson, laid-in. "…In [Mexico on Stone], [Mathes] presents the history and evolution of a virtually unstudied Mexican art form and provides examples of subject matter and the differing quality and style of individual lithographers through twenty-three monochrome or tinted plates and eight full color reproductions. Dr. Mathes also demonstrates the relationship of lithography to printing and supplies a bibliographical checklist of major Mexican lithographic works, with a directory of their producers. Mexico on Stone is the first treatment in English of the subject, and possibly the first study in any language of the development of lithography and chromolithography in areas of Mexico outside the capital city" (from the prospectus).

About Michael R. Thompson, Booksellers, ABAA/ILAB

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietor: Carol Sandberg
