Illustrated dust jacket; 12mo 4 1/2 x 7½; Purple stamped boards with gilt decoration. In dust jacket. No mention of "Metropolis" on pg vii in the list of Readers Library books, but is mentioned on list on rear flap. Additional Info SF138. Condition Very good in good dust jacket. 1st state. Gilt rubbed. Toning commensurate with age. Dust jacket chipped with front cover partially detatched but securely protected in Brodart. Provenance From the collection of Daniel (Dan) Breen, lifelong collector of rare, uncommon, and significant Science-Fiction and Fantasy. Story is set in 2026 in a technologically advanced city, which is sustained by the existence of an underground society of labourers. An interesting example of expressionist literature. ... Michael Joseph of The Bookman wrote of, this often called mystical work, "Metropolis is one of the most powerful novels I have read and one which may capture a large public both in America and England if it does not prove too bewildering to the plain reader. " An interesting aside, "The poster for the 1926 Fritz Lang film Metropolis, an extremely rare image that fetched $357,750 at Sotheby's in 2000 and $200,000 on the same year." .
