About This Item
NP: C. Felber, 1907. First edition. Hardcover. vg. Large quarto (11 1/2 x 9 3/4"). 98 leaves. Uncut. Original brown morocco with gold lettering on spine. Decorative raised bands. Dentelles. Endpapers with a striking Art Nouveau floral motif. Ribbon marker. Contemporary gift inscription on fly leaf: "A mon cher ami Fernand, en témoignage de bonne amitié. St. Raphaël le 6. 3. 1907. Charles" (To my dear friend Fernand, in memory of a good friendship. St. Raphaël, March 6, 1907. Charles). This striking early 20th-century blank journal contains 98 mounted leaves on vellum, with each leaf featuring a different illustrated vignette on upper margin. The vignettes are mostly allegorical, others are religious (God responding to Moses: "Ego Sum Qui Sum," The Crucifixion), and historical (Vercingetorix, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71). Some of the vignettes are signed in the plate by A. Mangonot, Paul Avril, G. Alaux, Mengin, Edme Couty, P. Kauffmann, Gustave Fraipont, H. Danger, Régereau, A. de Richemont, Petiau, Camille Lefèvre, E. Matthis, and others. A tiny scratch on spine, and three minor scratches at upper edge of front board. Very minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.
