About This Item

New York: Charles L. Webster & Co, 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 12mo. Pp. vi, 209, [7] of publisher's advertising. First state of the first edition, with editor Arthur Stedman's note dated March 1892 and no frontis. author portrait. Gray-green publisher's cloth, titles stamped in gilt and series device stamped in black on the cover and spine, endpapers decorated with an olive green leaf pattern. Minimal spine lean and toning to leaf edges, boards crisp and square, binding tight. These short stories and one play (Meisterschaft) previously appeared in Century and Harper's Magazine. The editor cites new copyright law as permitting moderately priced collections such as this, the first in a small-format "Fiction, Fact and Fancy Series" from the publishing house founded by Twain. The effort was in vain: bankruptcy came two years later. BAL: 3435 A, with the decorated endpapers.

An exceptionally well-preserved first edition first state copy, preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
