About This Item

London, New York, Washington, and Chicago: Vizetelly & Co. And Brentano's, 1887. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition, one of "Vizetelly's One-Volume Novels." This series was initiated by Moore and the Publisher to break the censorship of the dominant circulating libraries. The "realistic novelists" of the time such as Moore had been at a distinct disadvantage. An uncommon to scarce title. Original brown cloth binding with black titling on the front cover, black and gilt on the spine. Chean text; 282 pages, with a 32-page catalog in the rear. (Interestingly, this was not enough for the publisher, who also included a two-page advert prior to the half-title, and a list of Moore's titles opposite the Title Page.) Lightly bumped, with a moderate amount of soiling. There is an old bookseller's label on the front paste-down, and a stamped owner's name on the reverse of the FFEP. Quite a solid copy of this scarce and historically important novel. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
