A 17 year-old former indentured servant, Mercy Short is urged by Cotton Mather to write a diary, which tells of her capture by Indians after the massacre of her family and her ransom by other settlers. Set at the time of the Salem witch trials, the captivity was an experience which led her to believe she was bewitched. Based in part on Cotton Mather's own account of Mercy Short.
