About This Item

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1911. First edition, first printing, of this posthumous collection of the American philosopher and psychologist's speeches and essays, most notably "The Moral Equivalent of War", which was first published here in book form; with the bookplate of James's friend, the civil rights leader and founding president of the NAACP, Moorfield Storey (1845-1929). James's son arranged the publication of the work, noting in his preface: "Professor William James formed the intention shortly before his death of republishing a number of popular addresses and essays under the title which this book now bears... I have departed in no substantial degree from my father's idea, except perhaps by including two or three short pieces which were first addressed to special occasions or audiences and which now seem clearly worthy of republication in their original form". Storey campaigned on a variety of issues including anti-imperialism, free trade, and the gold standard. He is best remembered for his campaigns for civil rights for African Americans, and also for Native Americans and immigrants. He founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and led the organization from its founding in 1909 until his death in 1929. James and Storey were both prominent in the anti-imperialist movement initiated by the Spanish-American War in 1898, and were both members of an intellectual dining club. Some of their correspondence is preserved in the Houghton Library. On retirement, James wrote to Storey, encouraging him to retire also, so they could "write out all the truths which a long life of intimacy with mankind has recommended to each of us as most useful. I think we can use the ebb tide of our energies best in that way. I'm sure that your contributions would be the most useful of all" (21 February 1907, in Letters of William James, II, 1920, p. 266). Loosely inserted is a notice from Henry James, requesting those who have letters from his father get in touch for the forthcoming edition of William James's letters; Storey's letter cited above was eventually included, and perhaps its inclusion was triggered by the notice. Octavo. Original green cloth, paper label to spine printed in black and ruled in red, top edge gilt, others uncut. Light darkening to label and trivial rubbing at extremities, abrasion to front free endpaper where notice was formerly adhered, calling card of Mrs Alfred Rodman Weld inserted as bookmark with offsetting to pp. 182-3, page extremities a little toned, short closed tear at foot of pp. 267/7, some leaves unopened towards the rear, still a very good, tight copy. McDermott 1911:2.
