About This Item

London: G. Smith, 1739. Leather. Fair. 8" by 5". Not stated. A very scarce and sought after book. Volume two only. Thirteen plates, twelve of which are folding. Benjamin Baddam (c1693–1740) was a printer and compiler of the Memoirs of the Royal Society. He compiled an abridgement of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. It was printed for him between 1738 and 1744 by Godfrey Smith in ten volumes, with 131 folding plates drawn by G. Smith and engraved by James Hulett, under the title Memoirs of the Royal Society, being a new abridgment of the Philosophical Transactions for the years 1665 to 1735. Previous abridgements of the Philosophical Transactions had been carried out on a piecemeal basis, whereas Baddam's version provided continuity and uniformity for the first time. The boards are detached and the back board is missing. There is significant wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing with loss to the leather. Internally the pages are slightly browned with handling marks and some small stains. There is the occasional very mild spotting. Overall the condition is fair externally and good internally. Fair
