The private memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte during his directory, consulate, and empire (1793-1815), celebrated work by M. de Bourrienne, Napoleon's private secretary and close relation from childhood. Giving an intimate and vivid account of the author's interactions with Napoleon, his mother and family, his wife, notable French politicians, marshals, an other important figures. Due to the closeness of the relationship and hence details shared on Napoleon's character, this work caused controversy particularly with devoted Bonapartists. Originally published in French in 1829-30, the present set is of an early edition, first to include an account of the important events of the hundred days, of Napoleon's surrender to the English, and of his exile and death at St. HelenaWith a frontispiece to each volume and twenty-one plates throughout. Collated, lacking portrait of Klebler to vol. I. Featuring a folding plate. In the original publisher's uniform full cloth bindings. Externally sound with shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, soiling to the boards and spine. Internally, the binding is generally tender, holding. Split to vol. I to p. 1, held buy three cords only, backstrip laid down. Light spotting scattered to the leaves, although the pages appear generally very clean throughout. With a frontispiece to each volume and twenty-one plates throughout, lacking portrait of Klebler to vol. I. Good
