About This Item
London: S. and E. Harding, 1793. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A lavishly illustrated English translation of Anthony Hamilton's MEMOIRS OF COUNT GRAMMONT. First published in 1713, Hamilton's memoirs of his brother-in-law's time in the court of Charles the second offer a vivid account of the Restoration court. Full crimson straight-grain morocco by F. Bedford, with minor wear to joints and extremities. Varying degrees of foxing to and offsetting from the plates. Photographs show more severe examples. The marbled endpapers bear the heraldic bookplate of "C.L.F. Robinson, Newport, R.I." with the motto "Virtute non Verbis" - the President of the Colt Firearms Company who was found dead on his yacht on his way to Newport in 1916. The sale catalog of his library noted the late Robinson " was well known as a liberal and discriminating collector of rare books. Many volumes from the Hoe and Huth collections were secured by him and his library became exceedingly interesting and important" (Catalogue of Rare Books, Anderson Galleries, 1917). The entry from the same catalog is pasted to the free endpaper. [1]-363, [i]-lxxxiv [notes and illustrations], 3 page index of names. 11 x 9
