About This Item
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.. Very Good. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a very presentable book with only light external wear, but a number of internal "enhancements" added by a former owner, notably his name & date and circumstances of purchase in ink on the front endpaper, plus a photocopied review of the book (from The American Chow Chow Magazine, March 1976) affixed with tape to the inside front cover; the book also has some moderate foxing to the edges of the text block, but is otherwise nice and clean inside]. (B&W photographs) The faux memoirs of a real dog, a Chow who was born on Long Island in 1908 and lived until 1924, and was, in his day, one of the most famous dogs in the world. In addition to being a New York show dog, Chi-Chi accompanied his wealthy owners, Evander Berry Wall and his wife (the latter the "editor" of this book), on their European travels, "meeting many famous people and living in the finest hotels. [The book] is a valuable insight into how Chows were thought of in several parts of the world in the early 1900's. Through Chi-Chi's eyes we learn what a Chow might have thought about everything including himself and his ancestry." [Quoted from the aforementioned book review.] Also published in a French edition (fittingly, given that Chi-Chi himself is buried in a dog cemetery just outside Paris), the book is quite scarce in any printing. ****NOTE that due to the high value of this book, international shipping must be via USPS Priority Mail, which will require a supplemental shipping charge; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** .
