Excerpt; American Judaism is now observing its three hundredth anniversary. In commemoration of the event, the American Jewish Archives has prepared this collection of memoirs.
The prime purpose of the Preface is to explain the editorial rules which were employed and to thank the many institutions and individuals who so graciously aided and encouraged the editor in his task. The nature and significance of the autobiographies and memoirs are explained in the detailed Introduction which follows.
The personal recollections and autobiographies which follow the Introduction are, on the whole, printed as they were written or originally published. Wherever it was necessary to edit them, the University of Chicago Press Manual of Style has been followed. The punctuation and paragraphing are the editor's, but the spelling and grammar have not been touched. For whatever mistakes in spelling, grammar, or fact appear in the text, the original author is responsible. We have not supplied sic whenever an author nodded, lest the pages be pock-marked and the reader be annoyed by the too frequent interruptions. Transliterations from foreign languages made by the original writers have been retained as they appear in the original, even if the reader is confronted by two or more spellings of the same Hebrew word. Those made by the editor follow modern accepted forms. In transcribing Hebrew words, the practice of The Jewish Encyclopedia has been followed, but diacritical marks have been omitted. Notes interpolated by the editor can be easily recognized, for they appear in square brackets. The Index to this work, which consists of three volume will appear in the last volume
