About This Item
xii, 108, xiii-xxviii printed pages + 2 leaves of publisher's adverts at beginning and end (some handling marks). 72 coloured maps, edited by L.W.Lyde. Very slight age-toning and browning. Advert endpapers. All edges red. Contemporary ink inscription on verso of half-title page, dated 1894. Provenance: E.J.Smith. Letter Weight Library. Printed by David Bryce & Co. Glasgow. Rare variant on Bryce Pearl Atlas of the World (Welsh, 5490). 60 x 89 mm. Original grey cloth. Spine with Eddystone lighthouse embossed design in black with titling at the top of the structure. Back cover with Mellin's Food panelled advert. Front cover with "Mellins Pearl Atlas" superimposed on globe, above a trade mark design of a swallow with elongated forked tail. Some slight wear at head and tail of spine; a few short creases in the cloth that has some mild browning. Lyde was a hugely influential teacher and author of Geography and editor of atlases- a pioneer in his field. Not in Bondy, nor Spielmann, nor Welsh. WorldCat locates no copies worldwide. This is a rare variant of the Bryce Pearl Atlas of the World. Although this variant is unrecorded, Bryce is known to have worked closely with Mellins sponsorship on the Old Mother Hubbard's Fairy Tale Book. Both these titles were clearly intended to bring the advertised baby food products to the attention of parents with growing families. Bryce's most prolific commercial partner by far was in connection with his dictionaries and with Pears, who promoted soap and cleaning products .
