About This Item

Lisboa, na typographia calcographica, typoplastica, e litteraria do Arco do Cego, 1801. Halftitle, title, (iv), 70, (i) pp. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards. A copy on slightly blue paper. A copy that sometime during its existence has gotten several small holes in the covers and the text. The last page contains a catalogue of the books on art that were published by the Arco do Cego press and a list of libraries where these could be bought. Quite rare little work with only a few copies in libraries around the world.

First, and only Portuguese edition of this work by François Saverio Vispré, first published in French as "Le Moyen De Devenir Peintre En Trois Heures". The book, in the form of a dialogue, was first published in France in 1755 and was popular enough to go through at least four editions. In it Vispré, an established artist, describes the history of painting on glass, then proceeds to explain what colors are required and what combinations should be used for skin, hair, trees, clouds etc. This is one of the few books issued by the short-lived printing office of the Arco do Cego that was established in 1799 under the direction of the botanist José Mariano de Conceicão Veloso, in order to spread information about new techniques in the arts, industry and agriculture in Portugal and Brazil, by making the best recent works on those subjects available in Portuguese. The Arco do Cego was well equipped, with its own foundry for making type, its own presses and its own designers and engravers, two of whom - Romão Eloy and Ferreira Souto - later introduced the art of engraving to Brazil. The appointment of Veloso to the position of director of the Royal printing office meant the end of the Arco do Cego venture in December 1801. This Portuguese edition is rare with only a few copies in libraries around the world. (OCLC 3 x Canada (Oshawa, Toronto, Victoria), 1x USA Coming Glass Museum & 1x Lisbon Gulbenkian).

About Knuf Rare Books

Knuf Rare books was founded in the 1950s by Frits Knuf in the Netherlands.  After an apprenticeship with Frits I took over the firm in 1996 which we then moved to France in 2001 where we are still based. The business is run from our home in Lavardin, one of the most beautiful villages of France located  in the Loire Valley, that can easily be reached from Paris. Visitors are most welcome, but by appointment please. I am interested in the History of the Book and have a good inventory of rare and uncommon printed books, ephemeral items, prints and manuscripts from the incunable period to the twentieth century. My stock is especially strong in early auction- and library catalogues, type specimens, continental printer’s and engravers manuals, calligraphy manuals. Another interest is early continental architecture books and early art auction catalogues. Every year I issue two fully illustrated and annotated printed catalogues that are sent out upon request. In addition to that I also send out short email lists every week with a selection of books about books from our stock. And of course, I exhibit at several major international book fairs, such as New York, Boston and Paris. We work mainly with institutional customers, and are happy to discuss special institutional requirements. I adhere strictly to the professional standards and code of conduct of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers and the Syndicat national de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne (SLAM),  and the Compagnie Nationale des Experts (CNE) to which I belong. I have been an international rare book dealer for over 25 years and am a member of the Nederlands Genootschap van Bibliofielen. If you want to buy or sell single books or whole collections, have an expert valuation or if would just like some advice, please do not hesitate to contact me.
