About This Item

New York: Random House, 1946. Third Printing. INSCRIBED by the author at his home, Tor House in Carmel in 1949. Tall 8vo. 107 pp. Black cloth spine over orange paper covered boards with gilt lettering in publisher's dustjacket. A fine copy in near fine dustjacket (some age toning). 'Medea' is an ancient Greek tragedy written by Euripides, based upon the myth of Jason and Medea and first produced in 431 BC. Jeffers adapted 'Medea' into a hit Broadway play in 1947, in a famous production starring Dame Judith Anderson, the first of three actresses to win a Tony Award for the role. It was directed by John Gielgud, who co-starred as Jason. 'Medea' opened on Broadway at the National Theatre on October 20, 1947, transferred to the Royale Theatre on December 15, and closed on May 15, 1948, after 214 performances.
