Compiled by long-time Parrish expert and curator Alma Gilbert, THE MASTERWORKS brings together the most popular, most important, and most fanciful of Parrish’s paintings. Here you’ll find the glorious Dinkey Bird, the extensive Florentine Fete murals, the amazing Interlude, and the sublime Daybreak, which sold for a record $4.25 million at a Sotheby’s auction in 1996. Also included are some of Parrish’s lesser-known works, through which we see the development of the artist’s style and technique. Through historical analysis, contemporary news clippings, and letters from the artist himself, we get to know the genius behind the artwork. Updated with all the current Parrish scholarship, this new edition of THE MASTERWORKS continues the grand tradition of celebrating Parrish’s work and bringing his oeuvre to the public. ALMA M. GILBERT is an art historian and collector who is considered one of the foremost authorities on Maxfield Parrish. She is the author of ten books about Parrish's work and resides at The Oaks, Parrish's former home in Cornish, New Hampshire." From the publisher -- with a bonus offer--; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall .

Synopsis

Alma Gilbert has dedicated the past twenty-five years to the collection, preservation, and admiration of the works of Maxfield Parrish. From the early 1970s to the present, she has bought, owned, and sold over one hundred originals. She estimates that she has exhibited over three hundred works at her California galleries: La Galeria (1972–1985) and the Alma Gilbert Galleries (1987–1996).   In 1993, she purchased a portion of Parrish’s New Hampshire estate, The Oaks, where the above photograph was taken. She has written several books on her favorite artist: The Make Believe World of Maxfield Parrish , two Parrish Poster Books, A Treasury of Parrish in Children’s Literature, The Mechanic Who Loved to Paint , and two editions of Maxfield Parrish: The Masterworks . In the summer of 1998 she opened a museum in Cornish, New Hampshire, dedicated to the works of the artists of the Cornish Colony. The opening exhibit was, of course, A Celebration: The Hundredth Anniversary of Parrish’s Arrival in Cornish .
