Hardcover. 8vo. 22cm, first edition, later printing, v,12p., single sided leaves, heavy stock paper, title page vignette, 12 illustrations, maroon endpapers, original green cloth with beveled boards, decorated title gilt on the upper cover, repeated in blind on the bottom board, gilt spine title, some bubbling to upper cover, a very good copy ~ One of Whittier's best poems written in the rural poetic genre. Gracefully illustrated by Irish artist, William J. Hennessey. This poem contains the oft used quotation: For all the sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, "It might have been!
