About This Item

London: Goerge Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1919. Hardcover. Very good. Hardcover. Octavo. 339pp. Incl. index. Later printing. This, Bergson's second book, first appeared in 1896. Bergson argues that memory is deeply spiritual rather than of a material nature. This copy from the library of Artie Shaw, with his ownership signature on front paste-down. Dark red cloth has light rubbing to spine ends, with dent along fore-edge of cover. Evidence of water damage on rear cover, effecting the corner of the endpaper. Artie Shaw was an American clarinetist and popular bandleader of the 1930s and '40s. " Apart from his interest in music, Shaw had a tremendous intellect and almost insatiable thirst for intellectual knowledge and literature."- wikipedia.

Synopsis

Matter and Memory (1896) is one of the four main works by the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941). Its subtitle is "Essay on the relation of body and spirit", and the work presents an analysis of the classical philosophical problems concerning this relation. Within that frame the analysis of memory serves the purpose of clarifying the problem. Matter and Memory was written in reaction to the book The Maladies of Memory by Théodule Ribot, that appeared in 1881.
