Title page shows age-toning, soiling and staining; a small darker spot of staining is present near the upper corner. The inside margin of the frontispiece is carefully restored with some spots of loss to the inner black border-line of the illustration. End papers are stained; notations in an early hand are scrawled on the front free end paper. Interior pages contain light age toning, scattered marginal foxing, soiling and wear. A long strip is excised / torn-out of the outer margin on p. 221, running right up to the edge of the text, and obscuring a few letters; a piece is also torn from the bottom corner of p. 227 obstructing the last words in a couple of text lines. The most very minor of shelf wear here and there. Boards clean and tight. All quite remarkably well preserved. Hard to imagine a better copy exists. Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be." Cheiro's famous book on ghosts, RARE signed. Born William John Warner, he became a celebrated clairvoyant, astrologer and palm reader and authored several well known books on these topics. He told the fortune of many celebrated figures of his day, including Mark Twain, Thomas Edison and Oscar Wilde.
This copy is in very good condition. Please see photos, all of which are of this copy. The book is essentially sound, with in fact very clean pages with only some foxing on outer edges but remarkably clear in text itself save for a few spots on just a few pages. Some give to spine but nothing too serious. The title page seems missing (and one other page -Part 1 title page- is unattached but present, see photos), all other pages seem present. Generally though the pages seem attached OK, some gentle handling needed as with many popular books from this era. FEP has small indent of earlier pencilled price but not especially evident.
