The catalogue for the 1990 exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., showing the paintings and drawings resulting from Henri Matisse's two pivotal visits to Morocco in 1912 and 1913. Every Moroccan painting and some four dozen of Matisse's little-known Tangier drawings are reproduced in this catalogue, along with a wealth of documentation. The exhibition itself represented a new era of cooperation between Russian and American arts institutions with contributions of talent and resources from Moscow, Leningrad, New York and Washington museums. 293 pages, 9 1/2 x 12 inches, light-card pictorial covers, 147 illustrations many in full color. Essays by Pierre Schneider, Jack Cowart, John Elderfield and Albert Kostenevich as well as three appendices, a bibliography and index. There is some damp-staining in varying degrees to the last fifty pages of the catalogue, Most of the damage is minor and there is no loss of clarity or content on any of the pages. O/w the covers and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. No tears or chipping. Makes a very decent reading/reference copy.
