An insightful survey of the masters of painting, discussing and displaying not only their work but also their social and historical context, the cultural milieu they learnt and practiced their art in, the impact of science, economics, politics, and religion on their work, much more, beginning with the art of Giotto in the fourteenth century and studying art forms etc. through to Cezanne's work in the late nineteenth century. Large-format hardcover, contains illustrations, note on museums and galleries, indexed, 183pp., boards show light wear and spotting, interior pagination clean and bright throughout - with only one index page marred by a few pen marks. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
