About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1957. Near fine.. First edition of this sf adventure story - beautifully bound, likely for presentation, with a pencil annotation at the rear noting "From the library of Michael Howard," one of White's editors at Jonathan Cape, who was best known for working with Ian Fleming. Twins Nicky and Judy and their dog Jokey find themselves marooned on an island with the psychic MASTER and his henchmen. In turns hyperbolic, absurd, suspenseful, T. H. White's THE MASTER is somewhat of a science fiction complement to his earlier ONCE AND FUTURE KING. John Clute and Peter Nicholls describe White's SF as "sharing the sentimentality, satirical power, sadness, longing for retrospective havens, manic humor and compassion of his best fantasy."
A charming adventure story, in an attractive fine binding. 7.5'' x 5''. Navy blue goatskin binding with gilt lettering. Top edge gilt. Gilt tooled dentelles. Blue Cockerell marbled endpapers. Cartographic illustration to rear. 256 pages. Sunning to spine, a touch of toning to margins of endpapers. Bright and sharp.
